美国俚语




airhead: stupid person. "Philip is such an airhead!"

pig out: to eat too much (verb). “I always pig out during Spring Festival.”

Get out! or No way!:“I don’t believe you” or “What you’re saying is really surprising.”

wimp: a weak person. “Don’t be a wimp; tell him what you really think.”

luck out: to be lucky or fortunate (verb). “Our class lucked out; the teacher got sick and canceled our final exam.”

catch some rays: get some sunshine. “Let’s go to Hainan Island and catch some rays.”

K or thou: thousand. "I need a salary of at least 10 K [or 10 thou]." (usually used with money)

rip off : cheat or steal. (noun or verb).“That C.D. was such a rip-off!” My bike got ripped off last night.”

riot: something or someone very funny. "Jim Carrey is a riot!"

street smart: knowledgeable about city life. " Marvin is from the country; you can tell he's not very street smart."

ball or blast: a fun time. "I really had a ball in Ms. Slaughter’s ESL class."

hang out:to sit around with your friends doing nothing much

goofy: silly. "We were just hanging out and acting goofy!"

guts: courage. "It took a lot of guts to be the first one to volunteer."

zillion: an immense number. "Maria’s always complaining she has a zillion problems."

mickey-mouse: unimportant; time-wasting. "I'm sick of this mickey-mouse part-time job."
