Plants and animals are living things. But plants can’t move around. They can’t walk, the way animals do. So how can flowers grow here and there all over the grass? The seeds of plants move. That’s how.
Some plants have very light seeds. The wind moves them from place to place. They seem to fly. They can be taken far by the wind. Then they start new plants where the wind puts them down.
Some trees are found near the sea. The seeds of these trees fall into the water. Then the water takes them away. They may stay in the water for many days. Then the water pushes them up on new ground. There they begin to grow.
Some seeds are sticky. They may stick to men’s hats or women’s coats. Then these people see the seeds. They pick them off. Or the seeds may stick to birds. The birds go from tree to tree. They shake the seeds off. All these seeds fall to the ground and start new plants.
Other animals help plant seeds, too. Squirrels make holes in the ground to store nuts for food in the winter. Nuts are seeds. Sometimes the squirrels can’t think of where they put the nuts. Then they can’t find them. When it gets hot again, these seeds start new trees. So the squirrels have really planted trees!
